CARING FOR YOUR JEWELS

A Natural Way to Clean Silver

Mix 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of bi carb soda, 1 tablespoon of washing up detergent and one cup of hot water. Take a 30cm square of aluminium foil and fold or wad up until it fits into the bottom of a container.  Pour the liquid on top and then add your silver.  Leave for a minute or so and then remove and rinse.  This is safe to use on soft stones and pearls.

With appropriate care your unique Lotus Lane jewellery should bring you pleasure for many years to come. Avoid cleaning with harsh chemicals.   Soft stones, such as amber, turquoise and lapis don't like a lot of water or being in the garden, this may dull or scratch the stone if done over a prolonged period.   Do not put excessive strain on neck pieces.

Sterling Silver
Sterling silver may tarnish.  Contact with sunscreens, perfumes, deodorants, hairsprays, moisturizers or other chemicals on the skin may lead to tarnishing with some people,  as can other body products  or even certain foods.  This is not permanent.  As sterling silver is 92.5% silver and the remaining 7.5% is usually copper, the metals can oxidise or tarnish when in touch with air, usually there is some sulphur in the atmosphere - a common culprit in the discolouration of silver.

Restore shine by rubbing with a soft silver polishing cloth, available at most supermarkets or  you can order one from us.    Another very gentle, but effective method to clean your silver, is to use a silver polishing foam such as Twinkle or Goddards Long Term Silver Foam - not recommended for pearls.   Avoid any  chemical silver dips or abrasive cleaning agents.

Semi-Precious Stones

Semi-precious stones are quite resilient, however, high impact or prolonged exposure to chemicals, heat, and strong sunlight may damage or fade your stones.  Store with care and wipe with a soft cloth occasionally, to remove body oils. It is not recommended to dip semi precious stones into any type of silver dip.  Many stones are quite porous and the dipping solution could do some damage.

Swarovski Crystal
Swarovski Crystal is a glass compound and will break or crack if dropped.  Treat all jewellery that contains swarovski crystal with care.  Glistening shine may dull due to finger print marks so restore shine by polishing with a soft cloth.

Fresh-Water Pearls
Pearls are an organic material so may be scratched if not treated carefully. Contact with chemicals, cosmetics and perfume may also cause deterioration. A good rule of thumb is that your pearls are the last item you put on when dressing and the first item you take off when you get home. Periodically wipe with a soft cloth to shine, and always store in a small cloth bag to protect from sunlight and scratching.

Broken, chipped or damaged crystals

Although a damaged crystal, or one you may break or chip, is heartbreaking, those in the know report that sometimes the piece has 'chosen' to be damaged, it is as though it has chosen to impart to its keeper, a deeper level of understanding, self love, forgiveness and acceptance.  Damaged crystals are known as empathic crystals. Perhaps you need to bring more empathy into your realm, embrace the imperfection and come to terms that life comes with flaws and we do not need to be perfect.
